Fintech: The Revolution That Drove Banks to Modernize

Fintech companies—technology-driven firms focused on financial services—have transformed the way people manage their investments. By leveraging technology, these platforms have simplified traditionally complex processes, making them more accessible and personalized. They offer a better user experience thanks to their simplicity and ease of use, operate at lower costs than traditional bank investment services, and often deliver strong returns. Over the past decade, fintechs have democratized access to financial products, enabling anyone—regardless of location or income level—to invest, save, or access credit directly from their phone and at a lower cost.

In the United States, fintechs sparked a major disruption in the financial market. Apps like Robinhood, Betterment, and Wealthfront showed that it was possible to offer investment services without the traditional barriers of high minimums or large fees. Their success drew millions of users and pushed major banks to rethink their strategies. As a result, institutions like Goldman Sachs and Bank of America launched their own investment apps to compete and meet the rising expectations of their customers.

Chile Joins the Fintech Revolution

Chile has followed this global trend. In recent years, local fintechs have grown rapidly, replicating and adapting the U.S. model. This new competition forced traditional banks to respond. Institutions like BTG Pactual, Larraín Vial, Banco de Chile, and Santander launched their own digital investment platforms, recognizing that staying still would mean falling behind.

Today, Chile’s financial market is clearly evolving. Consumers now have more options, and banks are improving their digital platforms, though many still don’t meet expected standards. This transformation wouldn’t have happened without the pressure fintechs created. Far from being a passing trend, fintechs have reset the standard in the financial industry, pushing traditional players to evolve in a direction that benefits all customers.
